As a local Newport Beach ripper, there is never a shortage of talent out there...do you surf with the same guys and the same photographers or do you just do your own thing without any real routine? - There is definitely no shortage of talent in Newport. I feel like a complete kook at least once every day I surf Newport cause there are kids pulling crazy shit and making the rest of us look bad. I pretty much do my own thing out there. There are a few guys I surf with on a regular basis but you definitely see the same faces in the water and on the beach shooting photos everyday.
Outside of Newport where are your favorite places to go? - Well, growing up on the Central Coast I always love heading north to surf some cold water. Is it weird that I actually look forward to wearing booties?
Any trips coming up soon? - I was actually hoping you could talk to my wife about that. I have a baby coming in December and just got back from a 2 week trip to mainland Mex. Can you please convince her that I need another trip before then?
What boards are you riding right now? - Unfortunately my long time shaper and close friend Butch Ramirez is taking a shaping sabbatical right now so I’ve been trying some different boards. I have a carbon fiber 5’5” Lost fish that I’ve been amped on lately. I’ve also been riding a 5’11” quad and a 5’10” Flyer that have been working well. Butch had my boards so dialed...it’s been hard finding that “magic board” since he stopped shaping.
Are you getting sucked into the retro deal or the new Alaia deal? - I’m all about riding whatever makes you happy. Personally, I’m not into the Alaia or retro deal cause I have enough variation in my quiver where I can paddle out and have fun in pretty much anything. I try not to get stuck on any one board though...I like mixing it up as much as I can.
You just got married last year and are expecting a lil grom soon, how stoked are you on that? - Stoked beyond belief! My wife has been amazing and we just can wait till he’s here. Definitely looking forward to getting him in the water.
